Investigations carried out in both Corsica lagoons Diana and Urbino during the period from January to August 1985, permitted to define the main characteristics of microplankton cycle. Two phytoplanktonic blooms have been observed, first in winter, second less important in July-August. Any correlation cannot be observed between phytoplanktonic cycle or one its main components, and both environmental variables temperature and salinity. However dissolved oxygen ratio may be subject to large summer variations, drifting towards until ecological desequilibrious.

Estimates of carbon flow through bacteriplankton in the S. Benguela upwelling region based on 3H-thymidine incorporation and predator-free incubations. ArchiMer

Spatial and temporal estimates of bacterial numbers, biomass, activity and production were measured in the S. Benguela upwelling system during the course of a phytoplankton bloom. Bacterial numbers and biomass were highest in the euphotic zone and correlated closely with particulate carbon in the water column rather than with chlorophyll a concentrations. 3H-Thymidine incorporation gave good estimates of production. Differential utilisation of photosynthetic exudates and detrital POC by bacterioplankton during the course of a bloom might account for the varying significance ascribed to exudates and POC as a source of carbon for bacterial production.

Se presentan los resultados obtenidos de un muestreo realizado en el estuario interior del Golfo de Guayaquil con respecto a la presencia de una marea roja en el Canal de Jambelí frente a las poblaciones de Balao Grande y Tenguel. Se determinaron cuatro estaciones a lo largo del canal y en el estero cercano. Santiago de Cuba bay is an ecosystem eutrophic and vulnerable to FANs events. This work preset the results of monitoring during three year in eight stations located in the less polluted area of the bay, leading to the determination of the possible seasonal distribution and FANs frequency. 117 Phytoplankton species were identifying, which belong to 5 divisions; 28% of these species are reported as potentially toxic and/ or noxious. This zone of the bay classifies as politrophic, heterogeneous and dynamics. Las floraciones algales nocivas (FANs) afectan la salud humana, la economía pesquera, el turismo y los ecosistemas acuáticos. Dado que el problema de las FANs es mundial, para minimizar sus efectos se han implementado programas de monitoreo en más de 50 países. El registro de especies de fitoplancton tóxico ha ido creciendo y cada vez se conoce más diversidad de toxinas producidas por estos microorganismos. Understanding the social and ecological consequences of species invasions is complicated by nonlinearities in processes, and differences in process and structure as scale is changed. Here we use discontinuity analyses to investigate nonlinear patterns in the distribution of biomass of an invasive nuisance species that could indicate scale-specific organization. We analyze biomass patterns in the flagellate Gonyostomum semen (Raphidophyta) in 75 boreal lakes during an 11-year period (1997-2007). With simulations using a unimodal null model and cluster analysis, we identified regional groupings of lakes based on their biomass patterns. Dinoflagellates of the genus Ceratium are chiefly marine but there are rare occurrences in freshwater. In this study we analyze the invasion and progressive establishment of Ceratium furcoides, an exotic species, in the Furnas Reservoir. Samples were taken at 36 points in the reservoir, during the months of March, June, September and December, 2007. Measurements of some physical and chemical variables were simultaneously performed at each site. The occurrence of C. furcoides was registered at 20 sites, with densities varying between 0.57 and 28,564,913.0 ind.m-3. During november 1992 an intense bloom of the toxic dinoflagellate Alexandrium tamarense accurred in coastal waters from Mar del Plata, Argentina. Toxicity testing of Mytilus edulis populations of the region revealed high levels of paralytic shellfish poison. In order to study the possible PSP accumulation in mackerel (Scomber japonicus), mouse bioassay(AOAC) was performed in livers from individuals captured during December 1992. Liver extracts were lethal to mice; the sumptoms observed were typical of those caused by paralytic shellfish toxins. The most common type of harmful algal blooms (HABs) is referred to as a "Red Tide" because the bloom discolors the water, making it appear red. However, HABs may also be yellow, orange, brown, green, white, or pink, depending on which one of the three primary types of phytoplankton are responsible for the problem; dinoflagellate, diatoms, or bluegreen algae. Of the more than 4,400 marine phytoplankton species, only 50 to 60 are believed to be toxic. Seasonal and interannual variations of surface nutrients and hydrography data obtained in period (1997-2010) by the Institute of Marine Research over three transects: Fugl ya-Bj rn ya, Gims y and Svin y located in the Norwegian Sea have been studied. The results over the Fugl ya-Bj rn ya transect show good signature of the seasonal cycle of nitrate and temperature reacting both bloom and post-bloom periods. The Gims y transect shows a weak seasonal cycle of nitrate and temperature in the outer part because there is no enough data during the bloom and post-bloom period.
